It was a battle from the start of the 2024 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships presented by Discraft on Tuesday.

Inclement weather impacted the Grand Rapids, Michigan area but, after a few delays, the skies cleared and the 400-plus players hit the course to begin their quest for a PDGA World Championship.

And what a start it was.

Hot rounds were flying in everywhere in the MA1 A Pool at Brewer Park. The bar was set early with 8-under rounds from Ethan Owens, Grant Woodson, Parker Austin, Aiden Gajewski, Max Scheet and Andrew Hedgspeth. They continued later in the day with John Ryan III hitting that mark and earning a spot on the lead card. Ryan Monn, the highest-rated player in the field, rallied from a slow start to finish at 8-under as well.

They're all chasing the leaders.

Mason McLean finished 9-under in solo third place in the A Pool, one shot behind Michigan's Jason Green.

But the hottest round came from Iowa's Jeff Yanda, who turned in a 1047-rated, 11-under par to for the solo lead in the A Pool heading into Round 2 and Wednesday night's shuffle.

In total, 18 players are within four strokes of Yanda in the A Pool.

Over in the B Pool, the bar was definitely set at Johnson Park as New Jersey's RJ Chirkis torched the course to the tune of a 1057-rated, 13-under par round, over 100 points above his rating. Jordan Brower sits in the second position in the B Pool at 10-under.

The pools will switch courses on Wednesday before the field is merged and set for a sprint to the finish in Grand Rapids.

Fallasburg Park perhaps presented the biggest challenge after the weather as the record-setting FA1 division battled the elevation and mud for their opening round.

Virginia Polkinghorne came out the cleanest.

The Missouri native and 6-time PDGA Major champion in search of her first Am Worlds title turned in the hot round of 5-under par with a field-best seven birdies to open the action this week with a two-stroke lead.

Fellow Missourian Alex Ulp followed with a 3-under round and jumped into solo second place with birdies on 17 and 18 to finish.

Both shot over 70 points above their rating.

Kyle Kohut, fresh off an A-Tier win at the Ledgestone Open on Sunday, set the early pace with a 2-under round and Isabella Parker will round of the lead card for Wednesday as action shifts to Rotary Park.

Raven Gilkerson (E), Brook Johnson (+1), Tara Tracy (+1) and Kallie Howell, who card the first ace of the week, will be on the chase card.
