The journey to the College Disc Golf National Championship goes beyond strong play on the course.

It starts with organization and team building, literally.

Seventy-five universities from around the country will be represented this week at North Cove Disc Golf Club for the 2022 CDGNC, the first PDGA Major of the year.

Teams must not only build a competitive core of players, but must also go through the process of working with their universities to organize, grow and represent the school. This takes strong leadership on the part of the student athletes.

“For College Disc Golf, we’re really geared towards growing organizations and the leadership that comes out of that,” College Disc Golf director John Baker said. “For us, if we can have an impact on a student and help them grow personally or professionally then we have accomplished one of our goals at College Disc Golf.”

Teams organize, raise funds and work to become officially recognized through their schools. Powerhouses in other collegiate sports like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Kentucky, Kansas – to name just a few – will be represented this week in Marion, North Carolina at the CDGNC.

The list has grown from 10 teams during the first iteration of College Disc Golf to a record 522 competitors this week.

Emails roll in almost daily from prospective schools and teams looking to jump in.

“It’s been special to see,” he said. “We’ve put out a development guide and some other resources that teams have really been able to utilize to grow their clubs.

“They’re enabled and empowered to go seek sponsorships and to gain recognition through their university – everything that it really takes to get jerseys, discs, and travel through their school. That’s what we want them to do, to enjoy the College Disc Golf experience and take advantage of what other collegiate athletics get to do.”

After teams form and qualify through a number of regional events throughout the year, then it’s time for the competition, which is a team-based finale to close out the season.

That starts Wednesday and runs through Sunday at North Cove, which will debut a third course for this year’s championship.

In the Men’s Division I flight, Missouri enters the week at the top of the rankings ahead of Texas and Kennesaw State.

In Women’s Division I, Ferris State is looking for a three-peat.

Players compete in both team and singles formats with both contributing to the overall team score. All-American status is earned through the individual competition and at the end of a record-setting week in North Carolina, several national champions will be crowned.
