As of Saturday morning, there are now nearly 700 disc golfers in the greater Peoria area competing for their little piece of the metaphorical pie that is the 2015 Ledgestone Insurance Open. It’s hard to believe that there are still courses we’ve yet to see and tournament staff members we’ve yet to meet. The madness continues for one last full round this morning, and for some, a Final 9 as well.

Day one of the 2015 Ledgestone Insurance Open presented by Discraft was…well, pretty insane. It was a long day filled with surprises. Huge trees were falling all over the place at Northwood, a 14 year old spent hours as the clubhouse leader in the Open division, Paige Pierce hit an ace that ended up taking the #1 spot on Sportscenter’s Top 10 Plays, and if that wasn’t enough, the day ended with a PDGA Board of Directors member (Kevin McCoy #9453) tied for the lead in Masters.

Claiming the title of the richest disc golf tournament in the history of the sport is no easy task. Having raised an unbelievable $65,000 in added cash alone for the 2015 Ledgestone Insurance Open presented by Discraft, we can only assume that for the last 12 months Tournament Director Nate Heinold #49340 has been busy, to say the least.

The 2015 Ledgestone Insurance Open presented by Discraft is taking things to a new level. Yesterday evening it was announced on SmashboxxTV’s weekly podcast that this year’s event would have a mind-boggling $65,000 of added cash! You may be thinking, was that too many zeroes? No, it wasn’t. This year’s event will add a staggering amount of cash to the event, essentially making it the richest payout in the history of the sport.

As the end of 2014 draws nearer and nearer, all we can do is reflect on what an incredible year it has been for the sport of disc golf. It seems that almost every aspect of the game we know and love is growing at an ever-increasing rate. There were more tournaments, more players, more added cash, more spectators, and more disc golf companies/manufacturers, just to name a few. With that kind of exponential growth, we can and should expect 2015 to be off the charts.
