Randy Signor Takes Over as Editor of DiscGolfer Magazine
After publishing 100 issues of disc sports publications, Rick Rothstein is handing off control of DiscGolfer to long-time disc-sports journalist and enthusiast Randy Michael Signor.
“My daddy gave me my first flying disc in 1958, a Jumpin’ Jupiter. I still have it. (Okay, I have my brother’s—identical—as mine was lost.) I’ve been hooked since,” he said.
Signor has taught high school and college, worked as a learning disabilities tutor, and managed or co-owned several bookstores, but what he’s been doing mostly is writing and editing. He has worked as a professional writer and editor since 1980, for such publications as The Los Angeles Reader, Chicago Sun-Times, Seattle Times, Computer User, Crafts Report, Sea Ray Living, Book Magazine, many others. His first disc sports feature was in 1979 and it covered the Wham-O Rose Bowl championships that summer; the story appeared in Los Angeles and Chicago alternative newsweeklies, reaching several hundred thousand readers.
Eleven years ago he helped Rick on a couple of issues of Disc Golf World News; and some of you may remember—or perhaps you’ve managed to will yourselves to forget—he edited Flying Disc Magazine during its brief meteoric lifespan.
“I bring my professional experience to DiscGolfer but otherwise I see this as an enthusiast’s publication and as such it will leak more passion than most. I care deeply about disc golf and I fully understand that the PDGA’s membership is at least as passionate as I am.
“I see myself as a caretaker. My only agenda is to produce the finest disc golf magazine in the world. Oh, I have some hot-button issues I’d love the mag to get behind—uniform tee pads and more coverage of local clubs/groups leap to mind—but there’s no reason to fix something that isn’t broken,” he said.
“The best news is that all of Rick’s staff has agreed to stay on,” Signor said. “I can’t tell you how important that is to me. Collectively, Kent Johnson, Joe Feidt, John Whinery and Scott Papa bring a breathtaking range of experience and knowledge to DiscGolfer. It’s a super team and I am pleased to be a part of it.”
“I’ll be at the USDGC—love that course and event. Find me and introduce yourself,” Signor said. “And if you can write or take a great picture, tell me—we are always looking for talent.”
