Carlton, Perry Claim National Collegiate Individual Champion Titles
After three days and six rounds across six different courses, two Individual Champions have emerged from the 2016 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships (NCDGC), as well as true rankings of schools in the Team Doubles Flights.
Individual National Champions
Shooting the best scores for both Round 1 and Round 2 in the Women’s Individuals competition, Allison Carlton #61493 of the University of North Texas began the Finals today with a lead of seven and never looked back. Her lead only continued to grow on the 10-hole finals layout, finishing with a gap of 12 between her and second place finisher McKayla Thomas #53966.
Thomas shot the hot round with a 51, pushing her from the chase card to 2nd place overall. Unfortunately the effort was too little too late to prevent Allison Carlton from getting her second NCDGC Women’s Individual title (2014 & 2016).
Dustin Perry #36224 of Augusta University (formerly Georgia Regents-Augusta) would eventually claim the title of National Collegiate Individual Champion after an intensely competitive group of players consistently put his skills to the test.
After battling during the first two rounds with Ferris State’s Bryan Murphy #57183, the two would remain tied heading into the Finals with Justin Lammers #37852 and Ryan Anderson #50038 only a couple strokes back. Murphy handed over the lead quickly, suffering several out-of-bounds penalties early on in the 10-hole layout. Lammers made a run at Perry, but never gained enough on Perry to catch him.
Perry teed off on the last hole of the Finals layout with a lead of three. Even though it was an island hole, he didn’t have much to worry about, as the drop zone left him with a simple lay up to under the basket for a tap-in bogey. He did in fact miss the island off the tee, but it didn’t matter. Even with Lammers taking a birdie on the hole, Perry still tapped in for bogey to win by one.
