Get ready for the DGPT - Portland Open

After two weekends of Silver Series Events, the Disc Golf Pro Tour heads back to Oregon for the 2023 Portland Open Presented by Latitude 64. As well as being the 13th event on the 2023 DGPT schedule, this year’s Portland Open will be the first ever Elite+ Event. This new designation is shared by the upcoming Discraft Ledgestone Open and will feature higher purses, additional media focus, and 150% points awarded, the same as PDGA Majors and DGPT playoff events.
The Portland Open was founded in 2019 by Disc Golf Pro Tour CEO Jeff Spring and was originally held at the Blue Lake Course. When the tour returned in 2021, Blue Lake was unavailable so a new course was designed at the Glendoveer Golf Course. The Portland Open returned to Glendoveer in 2022, this time with pros playing Blue Lake in the first two rounds and then a new course on the East side of the Glendoveer property for rounds 3 and 4.
This year, the entire event will take place at Glendoveer with rounds 1 and 2 being played on the West Course while rounds 3 and 4 will be played on the East Course. The West Course has gone through significant changes from its first iteration in 2021, coming in at 10,692ft for the MPO field and 9,991ft for the FPO field. The East Course, measuring 11,245ft for MPO and 9,195ft for FPO, has undergone minimal changes since last year.
Valerie Mandujano went wire-to-wire in the 2022 Portland Open, bookending the tournament with hot rounds to finish nine strokes ahead of second place. This was Mandujano’s second Elite Series win after getting her first earlier in the 2022 season at the Waco Annual Charity Open. Mandujano would then go on to win the 2022 Beaver State Fling later that season.
The MPO field saw a much tighter finish with Simon Lizotte and Garrett Gurthie tied at 34 strokes under par going into Hole 18 in the final round. Both Lizotte and Gurthie went out of bounds on their second shot on the difficult par 5, but Lizotte went out much closer to the pin. While Gurthie’s upshot left him with a long par putt, Lizotte was able to lay up next to the basket for a tap-in par. After Gurthie’s putt fell short, Lizotte dropped in for the win.
After winning the 2022 OTB Open, Lizotte now had back-to-back Elite Series wins.
“Now I have to back it up,” Lizotte said of his mentality going into the 2022 Portland Open, “It’s like we always say in putting, twice or it’s luck.”
Now with more money and tour points on the line, the FPO and MPO fields will head to the Glendoveer West Course for the opening round of the 2023 Portland Open presented by Latitude64.
