Calvin Heimburg made a seemingly quietly move to the chase card on Saturday at the 2023 European Open, the second PDGA Major of the year.

He wasn’t quiet on Moving Day.

Heimburg dropped a 1080-rated 12-under round to jump to a two-stroke lead heading into Championship Sunday in Nokia, Finland with 18 holes remaining on The Beast between him and his first PDGA Major title.

It was the hottest round of the day by one stroke. Estonia’s Mauri Villmann followed with an 11-under round to jump into a tie for eighth place.

Day 3 leader Anthony Barela jumped to a 4-under through eight pace to start on Saturday but stalled slightly for a 5-under finish. He’s two-strokes back in solo second place.

Corey Ellis went 8-under to join the lead card, three back of Heimburg, and Day 1 lead Kyle Klein (-9) will round out the lead card at 22-under par in a four-way tie for fourth.

That includes the defending champion Eagle McMahon, who had three bogies throughout the round and closed with a double bogey on 18 — the site of Heimburg’s lone blemish — to drop from the lead card. Väinö Mäkelä birdied 18 for an 8-under round and is in that fourth-place logjam. Mäkelä continues to draw the largest cheers in his home country.

Ezra Aderhold maintained and is eyeing his best finish at a Major. Villman will round out the lead card.

Heimburg had three OB strokes on Saturday, including 18, but connected on all three of his circle 2 putts. He leads the tournament from that circle, as well as strokes gained tee-to-green at 6.78, according to UDisc.

Now it’s time for close for Heimburg, who has turned in a stellar 2023 campaign so far and is once again in position for the biggest win of his career.

Live coverage of Round 3 begins at 2:30 p.m. EEST / 7:30 a.m. EDT on the Disc Golf Network.
