Updated Thursday at 7:15 AM CST

Good Morning,

After evaluating current trends and data, play will resume this morning as previously announced at the 2023 PDGA Junior and Amateur World Championships. Event and PDGA staff have worked tirelessly over the last 36 hours on this issue to allow competitors the ability to play as much disc golf as possible at this event.

The PDGA Mid-Event Suspension & Cancellation Guidelines Policy references that Tournament Directors “can use a resource like AirNow.gov to stay informed about air quality.” This is the resource that event and PDGA staff initially used to suspend play.

Once play had ended for the day, staff began to more closely review this data to ensure that we had the most up to date information. Upon further review, event and PDGA staff learned that the primary sensor that was being used was in Normal, Illinois, some 35 to 55 miles away from our courses. While we continued to use this resource to make our decisions, on the evening of June 27, we began to track data from other resources such as Accuweather.

During the day on Wednesday, June 28, AQI index resources that event and PDGA staff reviewed continued to show elevated levels in the AQI index. As the afternoon progressed into the evening, resources such as Accuweather began to show a sharp decline in the AQI index for the various communities where our courses are located to levels in the 150 to 170 range. The data from resources such as AirNow.gov showed numbers that were slightly elevated from those figures.

Event and PDGA staff continued to monitor data overnight, and beginning around 1 a.m., the AQI numbers began to fall considerably in our region and across the entire state of Illinois. By 3 a.m. the numbers across multiple resources, including AirNow.gov and Accuweather, showed an AQI level that was acceptable for competition to continue. The PDGA’s referenced policy on Mid-Event Suspension & Cancellation Guidelines does require Tournament Directors to notify competitors when the AQI level exceeds 100. The level does currently exceed 100, though with the recent 6 a.m. update, the numbers have fallen again and based on the forecast from AirNow.gov, language from the IL EPA and the most recent update from the National Weather Service that “conditions will continue to improve on Thursday”, we do not expect additional AQI suspensions for the duration of this event.

Let's play some disc golf!

Updated Wednesday at 7:25 AM

Play for Wednesday June 28th has been suspended for all pools and courses due to air quality conditions. We are advising players not to go to their courses. We will be giving players a minimum of one hour's notice for a restart time

Updated Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.

Due to poor air quality in the Peoria, Illinois area on Tuesday, the following changes were necessary to continue play at the 2023 PDGA Amateur and Junior Disc Golf World Championships.

The goals for the following adjustments to the FA1 and MA1 fields are to have every player complete 36 common holes in a manner that creates the fairest opportunity for each player, while also returning the field to the normal schedule on Thursday.

Players who were on the course, but did not finish, must return to their last lie and will restart play at the designated time. There will be a two-minute warning before restarting play. Upon completion of the round, these groups will then play Wildlife, with the same groups and at the same tee time they started play on Tuesday.

The four groups that did not start their rounds will tee off according to this schedule:

C Pool

Players who were on the Northwood Blue course, but did not finish, must return to their last lie and will start play at 7:20 AM. There will be a two-minute warning at 7:18 AM. Upon completion of the first round, these groups will then play their second round at Northwood Blue, with the same groups and at the same tee time they started play on Tuesday.

The groups that completed their round at Northwood Blue will play in the same group and at the same tee time they played on Tuesday.

J Pool

Players will return to their lies on the Goodfield course to resume play at 9:00 AM. There will be a two-minute warning at 8:58 AM. The second round for the J pool originally scheduled at Washington at 9 AM will be moved to 2 PM in the afternoon, where the players will join the 20 competitors in the K pool who were scheduled to play the 18-hole course at that point. The J & K pools total 60 players making this an easy change.

D, E, F, G, H, and I Pools will continue their original scheduled play on Wednesday.
