PDGA Tim Selinske United States Masters Disc Golf Championships Rescheduled For 2021

The 2020 PDGA Tim Selinske United States Masters Disc Golf Championships have been postponed due to the uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was scheduled to run from May 28-31 in Columbia, Missouri.

Much like other events recently postponed due to this pandemic, the decision to not hold the U.S. Masters this season was made with the health and safety of PDGA members, competitors, tournament staff and volunteers as the foremost priority. Our partners in Columbia, including the Columbia Disc Golf Club, Tournament Director Joe Douglass, and Zach Franklin, the sports sales supervisor for the Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau, were always proactive in keeping PDGA staff informed of the situation locally and were communicative throughout the process. We appreciate their efforts to organize what we know would have been an outstanding PDGA Major tournament.

“We were really excited to host the event this year,” Douglass said. “Although we’re disappointed we can’t have it in 2020, it just gives us an extra year to prepare to make 2021 even better.”

On a positive note, this obstacle has once again proven the spirit of teamwork that flows through the disc golf community: The club in the Quad Cities region of Iowa and Illinois that was set to run U.S. Masters in 2021 has, as Douglass alluded to, offered to move back to 2022 to let Columbia take the stage next year.

“The long-standing and positive relationship that we have with the PDGA is important to the Quad Cities regional destination,” said Dave Herrell, President and CEO of Visit Quad Cities. “And, as they work through the challenge of identifying their future schedule, we are committed to assisting them with this process. The PDGA has been and will continue to be our partner and we look forward to hosting the 2022 PDGA Tim Selinske U.S. Masters Championships in the QC.”

“In these unprecedented times, it's great to work with partners like Columbia Disc Golf Club, Columbia Parks and Recreation, and the PDGA,” Franklin said. “We also are grateful for the flexibility and graciousness shown by the Quad Cities to allow us to bring this event to our community, and we are excited to welcome the PDGA to Columbia in 2021."

PDGA Director of Operations Mike Downes said he appreciates all of Douglass’ hard work, and that he was gutted that the city’s efforts would not yet be coming to fruition. Still, he was encouraged by the cooperation the situation has yielded.

“Joe and his team have invested countless hours, engaged with high-profile local sponsors, and worked tirelessly to ensure that Columbia has additional venues to match the already unrivaled Harmony Bends Disc Golf Course,” Downes said. “We are confident they’ll be ready to put on a show in 2021, and we’re appreciative of the Quad Cities team for their move to 2022.”

Players who have registered for the 2020 tournament will have their refunds processed by the host club, but please allow for five to seven working days to account for the high volume of traffic. Additionally, any members who received a 20% discount on 2020 registration due to their participation in the 2019 U.S. Masters will still be eligible for this offer in 2021. An email with instructions on how to redeem this offer will be sent prior to registration next year.
