It’s time.

After three long years in which the world has battled a pandemic and disc golf has experienced massive growth, a PDGA Major finally returns to the international stage for the 2022 European Open presented by Discmania.

The long-awaited return to Finland and the beloved and revered Beast course at Nokia DiscGolfPark in Nokia begins Thursday and runs through Sunday, when two PDGA Major champions will be crowned.

It’s the 10th running of the European Open, which began as a PDGA Major in 2006.

“It’s been a long preparation and we are finally here,” said Jussi Meresma, course designer and Discmania CEO. “It’s been a long time and it has accumulated to this point to show what the European Open is all about. It’s going to be very exciting.

“The best of the best are here.”

The Beast has been owned by McBeast for almost a decade. Paul McBeth is in the field and is the five-time defending champion. He’s won five of the six times he’s visited Nokia, dating back to his first trip in 2011 and first win in 2013.

But this year is up for grabs and a number of players are in contention.

Ricky Wysocki is looking for his first European Open championship after finding the podium trip after trip. Calvin Heimburg is in search of his first PDGA Major victory. Simon Lizotte, who has sizzled this season, is aiming for his first Major as well and a win this weekend would make him the first European — and just the second overall — to win the EO since Jesper Lundmark’s victory in 2009. Eagle McMahon is making his return to action for the first time in a few months as well.

Niklas Anttila is the highest-rated European player in the field behind Lizotte. Lauri Lehtinen, Linus Carlsson and Albert Tamm are in contention as well.

On the FPO side, it’s been Paige Pierce and Catrina Allen since 2013 as the pair have split the last four tournaments.

But they’re on the home ground of Eveliina Salonen, Henna Blomroos and Heidi Laine, who are all gunning to become the first European FPO winner. Kristin Tattar is out this weekend with an injury.

The history, the prestige, the fans and the PDGA Major title all make this a weekend to look forward to and remember.

“This is my favorite course, not only for the shots, but the atmosphere that comes with this tournament,” McBeth said.

It’s time for the European Open.
