It was a day of wild weather at the 2023 College Disc Golf National Championships in North Carolina.

The finish is going to be just as wild.

On a day where the second Division I Singles national champion was crowned, the top divisions are set up for a down-to-the-wire finale at North Cove Leisure & Disc Golf Club.

It started in the morning, both the rain and the pressure-packed penultimate day of the nati.

In the Men's Division I Team flight, Emporia State went to work, grinding out a strong 10-under round on the demanding Gorge track to jump to the top of the leaderboard. The Hornets were just one of two teams in the 64-team field to start the round 3-for-3 and stayed clean the rest of the way.

Right on their heels are the defending champions in Missouri, whose 9-under round pulled them to within two strokes heading into the finale with a repeat on their mind. Cincinnati is in third, five strokes off the pace, and Kentucky, Houghton and Clemson are within striking distance at 21-under par, six off Emporia State's pace.

No matter the results of the team finish, the Bearcats will head back to Cincinnati with a national championship title.

With the entire Men's Division I finals field within five strokes of the lead entering the final 13 on Friday, it was Cincinnati freshman Tanner Young emerging from a rollercoaster round on the Gorge course with a three-stoke win over teammate Calvin Caldwell. The lead changed constantly throughout the final singles round but Young weathered the storm, aided by three-straight birdies in the middle of his round and a clean finish, to hoist the singles title.

"I'm speechless," Young said. "I'm proud to represent the University of Cincinnati."

In the Women's Team flight, a photo finish is on tap as well.

Missouri, also the defending champs, and BYU enter Saturday in the same position they started out before Friday's rain run the the Boulders course: Tied at the top.

Action shifts back to River Run, where BYU had a one-stroke advantage over the Tigers in Wednesday's opening round. That course is also the site of Tailey Rowley taking down the Women's Singles title over the Tigers' Alexis Kerman.

Eighteen holes now separate a repeat for Mizzou or a sweep for the Cougars as they two teams have a seven-stroke lead over third place.

Here's a quick look around the rest of the action in North Carolina:

  • Men's DII Singles: Iowa State's Scott Ferguson leads Kentucky's Michael Faber, North Carolina State's Logan Edelman and Texas Tech's Justin Durhamn by two strokes.
  • Men's DII Team: North Carolina State leads Clemson by one stroke.
  • Men's DIII Singles: Anderson's Micah Jones won by two strokes over Missouri's Josh Hodde
  • Men's DIII Team: North Carolina State leads Liberty by five strokes.
