PDGA Updating Points Calculations for Doubles and Teams

Tuesday, December 28, 2021 - 14:55

The PDGA is making a change in the points calculation for doubles and team events starting on Jan 1, 2022. Points are calculated for each player in a division by multiplying the number of players beat and tied by the appropriate points factor for the division and tier of event.

Through 2021, doubles and team events used a modified calculation that rewarded points for the number of teams beat or tied in addition to the number of individuals. This resulted in awarding extra points to doubles events that were not available for singles events. The points calculations update starting Jan 1, 2022 removes the additional points in the calculation and levels the playing field for all events.

Example calculation:

Tournament: Doubles, C-tier, 10 teams in MA1 (20 players).

According to the PDGA Tour Points Factor chart, the MA1 division in a C-tier has a points factor of 5.

For the team finishing in 1st place, each player's points would be calculated as:

2021 and earlier: number of players beat or tied plus the number of teams beat or tied multiplied by the points factor.

(20 + 10) * 5 = 150 points

2022 and future: number of players beat or tied multiplied by the points factor.

20 * 5 = 100 points
